The same task, two useful approaches.
SMS with a document link
“Your September statement is available. Open the link to view it.”
The message directs the customer to another place to access the document. That destination could provide authentication, a searchable original or updated information.
MMS with a document image
“Your September statement is attached.”
The image accompanies the message. Its presentation and download behaviour depend on the supported phone, mobile service and settings.
Compare the whole customer task.
| Consideration | SMS with a link | MMS image through MMS Express |
|---|---|---|
| Document format | The linked service determines whether the customer gets an original file, a web page or a viewer. | The customer receives an image. MMS Express converts supported outgoing images to JPEG; it does not upload or convert PDFs. |
| Recipient requirements | Receiving the text requires SMS support. Opening a web link needs a compatible browser and connectivity, plus any access requirements of the destination. | MMS support and suitable mobile-service settings are required. The image may need a download action. No MMS Express app is required. |
| Privacy | The message or notification can expose text; a protected destination can add document access checks. | The image may be stored or forwarded on the receiving device. A wrong or shared number can expose its content. |
| Reporting | Available sending and link-access evidence depends on the chosen services. A link request alone need not identify the intended reader. | Message progress and recorded sending outcomes are available. Sent is not delivery confirmation or proof of reading. |
| Integration | Your software may need both a messaging integration and a suitable document-access destination. | Your software prepares the image, submits through the API and reconciles the returned message ID. |
| Availability | Check the recipient service and the availability of the linked destination. | Check the recipient service, device, settings and document-size suitability. Universal coverage is not claimed. |
When a short image is a good candidate.
A clear account summary, concise invoice or booking confirmation may be easy to understand as an image. The information can accompany the customer message without depending solely on a link to the document.
When another approach may fit better.
A brief reminder may need only SMS. A long document, searchable PDF, original signed agreement or sensitive record may need email, an authenticated portal or another agreed channel. This page compares workflows; it does not claim that MMS is better for every customer.
MMS Express is positioned for transactional MMS. This comparison does not promise an outbound SMS campaign feature or an automatic fallback from MMS to SMS.
Work through a statement example, check recipient considerations or review sensitive-content guidance.
